Gift set: Cépage Melon de Bourgogne
Hold on tight: the Melon de Bourgogne has never set foot in Burgundy. This grape variety, a cousin of Chardonnay, was born there centuries ago before packing its bags and heading west—a true defector of the vineyard!
Its moment of glory arrived with the great frost of 1709. With the Loire vineyards devastated, winemakers were looking for a robust, early-ripening grape variety to get back on their feet quickly. The Melon, hardy and ready for an early harvest, emerged as the unexpected savior of the Nantes vineyard.
Long relegated to the image of a simple, thirst-quenching wine, it actually has plenty of depth. Since the 2010s, the emergence of communal crus (Château-Thébaud, Clisson, Gorges, Monnières-Saint-Fiacre, and the like) has changed the game: delimited terroirs, longer aging, and higher standards. The Melon de Bourgogne is trading in its casual bar-wine attire for formal wear.
Open, taste, compare: these six bottles are proof that a grape variety from elsewhere can, over time, forge its own claim to greatness:
